What Being Part of a Military Family is Like For Me
by Victoria Pink

→ Go back to "A Look At Military Life"
Last year my step dad went to the Sudan right before Remembrance Day and he wasn’t going to be back until the middle of May.  It was in winter so it was really cold and we got a lot of snow, my brother and I had to help my mom shovel the driveway a lot.  It was really hard not having him there at Christmas, so on Christmas day we skyped him on our iPad and opened presents “together”.  I remember that when he was gone we had jelly bean jars that had one jelly bean for everyday that he was gone and every day we would eat one jelly bean, until there was none left, and then he would be home. I remember that my sisters took him being gone really hard and when my sister and I were walking home from school one day and she was crying because she was worried about him.  I also remember him coming home in February for two weeks which was great.  Until the end of the two weeks came and he had to leave again, it was hard to say goodbye a second time.

It was right before he left in February that we found out we were posted to Ontario. At first I was happy then that turned to sadness when I realized I would have to leave my friends and my Grandma, then I didn’t know what to think.  But just like other moves I knew that I could just easily make new friends and keep in contact with my old friends. After thinking about that it wasn’t so bad.  Since my step dad was in the Sudan we had to sell the house by ourselves, which meant keeping it clean which was hard to do with a family of four kids, one dog and two cats, but we did it.  After we sold our house and my step dad returned home we moved to Trenton Ontario.
At first I was really nervous about being in a new town and starting a new school. On my first day of school I had already met two friends and everyone was very nice so that made everything a lot easier.  I really like my new house and my new school and I’m really happy that we moved here.

Being part of a Military family we get to visit and travel to a lot of places that some non-military families may not be able to do.  I really like how the MFRC has youth groups and activities for the kids to do and I really like the trips! I also like the family day that the Military/MFRC plan.  Being around other Military families and kids reminds me that they go through similar things.  The Military has its ups and downs and can be very unpredictable and confusing at times.  But at the end of the day, I’m glad to be part of a Military family and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
