Kerry Vance, J.D., LL.M., Esq.
Kerry Vance is the spouse of Canada’s Chief of the Defence Staff, General Jonathan Vance. Born to Irish and Italian immigrant parents, Kerry was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Kerry enjoys living in Ottawa with her family.
Kerry attended university in New York State, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. She went on to study law and earned her Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree in Law and her Masters of Laws (LL.M) with a concentration in Administrative Law.
Kerry has been a licensed Attorney for more than 25 years. She is licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan and has been admitted to argue before the Michigan Supreme Court, the highest echelons of Military Courts, and the United States Supreme Court.
In August, 2015, Kerry retired from the United States Army in the rank of Colonel. She served as an Attorney Judge Advocate in a variety of duty assignments in locations both in the United States and abroad. Her career highlights include Chief of Detention Operations in Iraq; Senior Attorney to the NATO Commander in Italy; Legislation Attorney at the U.S. Pentagon, Legal Advisor at the U.S. Embassy, Rome, Italy; and Senior Attorney in Germany. Kerry has been awarded numerous awards and decorations among which are the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, and the Defense Superior Service Medal.
As the spouse of Canada’s Chief of the Defence Staff, Kerry is a strong advocate for military families, the “Strength Behind the Uniform.” She regularly visits military bases across Canada to meet and listen to military families. Kerry also participates in engagements with her international contemporaries to foster bonds, share the great initiatives the Canadian Armed Forces are pursuing for military families, and to learn from other nations about their efforts to support military families.
Kerry and her husband are the proud parents of 5 daughters, aged 12 to 19. They both share a love of the arts, fitness, boating, golf, and spending family time together with their daughters.
