The Invisible Ribbon Campaign raises awareness about the role of the military family and the resilience required in supporting our troops. It also pays tribute to the sacrifices they make in support of Canada. This annual event is in recognition of those that "wear the invisible uniform." This year is no exception as we look to aiding our military families in their efforts to access health care.
For many military families, answering the common question of “Where are you from?” or “Where is home?” is not an easy task. A military family could start their journey on the west coast in Comox, British Columbia and then find themselves posted to Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador on the east coast. With every posting comes the opportunity to plant roots anywhere! But how would you describe ‘home’ when you have lived in so many places across Canada?
The unique challenges faced by military families can have an impact on the operational effectiveness of a Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) member; which is why we at the Trenton MFRC are dedicated to going above and beyond to ensure military families have the resources they need. Our primary focus is a resource that everyone needs and is something we can all relate to: health care. As Canadians, we pride ourselves on universal health care. But access to a primary care physician is not a luxury that everyone can access with ease.
Due to the unique challenges of the military lifestyle, service families are often at a higher disadvantage when obtaining a primary care physician. There is even a common misconception that military families receive health care through their CAF base. In fact, according to the Seamless Canada Initiative, 24 per cent of military spouses do not have a family physician. This figure is more than doubled in comparison to the civilian community. Furthermore, 17 per cent of children of military families do not have a family physician.
To offset this challenge, the Trenton MFRC has made a goal to create sustainable health care solutions for military families. To achieve this, we identified a short-term and a long-term approach which includes developing partnerships with health care officials and regional health agencies. In the short-term, the Trenton MFRC’s aim is to support military families by facilitating access to virtual health care tools that could help with their immediate health concerns.
